Eating disorders are complex and multi-layered, so it is no wonder that an idealized eating disorder testing instrument has yet to be identified. A review of the current crop of eating disorder testing instruments reveals both the promise and the limitations of these measures.
The promise lies in the fact that there are a number of different types of eating disorder tests currently available. These include self-report measures, clinical interview measures, and observer-rated measures. This array of measures allows for a more comprehensive assessment of eating disorders than was previously possible.
The limitations of the current measures are two-fold. First, most of the instruments were developed to assess anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and as such, they may not be adequate to assess the full range of eating disorders. Second, while the measures have good reliability and validity, they are not perfect. For example, the self-report measures are subject to biases such as under-reporting and self-enhancement.
